Weekly Report 14/3/08

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Mar 14, 2008 11:19 am

After a week of productive fishing our river bar has claimed four boats in four days, mainly due to early morning big run-out tides and inexperience. No one has been hurt but it’s only a matter of time so if you’re visiting, both bars must be respected.
Spotted mackerel are about off Grassy in good numbers with the odd Spanish over the last two weeks. There have been some nice Snapper coming out of the same area. Yellowfin are falling victims to trolled lures in front of the Jail while Fish Rock has a few kings, and as Tony Lambrechtsen from Sydney found out. Snapper up to 7kg in close. The Victorian boys on Live Frenzy out on the Shelf got amongst huge mahi mahi up to 24kg, keeping them around the boat by throwing life jackets, buckets, anything to get the shadows the fish like. Plenty of live bait around but they’re on the big side.
10-year-old Jack Nolan from around Coffs Harbour hooked his first jewfish, of 11.2kg off the north end of Smoky Beach on a pilchard. Whiting are still on the bite along the beaches with the some good tailor out of the surf and off the rocks.
Jewfish are making a return to the breakwalls in the river with a few caught over the last week. There have been some nice flathead and bream coming in while whiting are on the bite in the cleaner water. We have heard whispers of early blackfish caught in the river but I wouldn’t dust off the blackfish gear just yet.
