Weekly Report 18/7/08

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Jul 18, 2008 11:36 am

Snapper season is well upon us with some great catches coming in over the last few weeks. Most are around 3kg mark with the best reported a 10kg thumper. The reefs around 30m seem to be the most productive from Grassy Head to past Scotts Head. Floating Pilchards through a good berley trail has been getting the best results. The Berkley Gulp chicken range of soft lures has been very effective so come in and see the new colours. Straying a little wider will get you among the leatherjackets while there has been a report of bar cod past 60 fathoms. Heading down south, big tailor have been taken in close off the Jail to Green Island while kings are around Fish Rock with a few nice snapper.
This time of year you never know what will come off the rocks. Local Matt Simmons landed a 7.2kg snapper near the Gap on tailor bait. Drummer are in good numbers off the Lighthouse ledges. Smoky Beach has a few bream, tailor and again some big salmon along the beach. Gap Beach has salmon and tailor off the south end.
Blackfish have slowed down this week but the fishos are still getting a feed. Bream are in better numbers further up river with a few flathead as well. The full moon produced jewfish in the river last week out of their usual haunts. Young Kegan and Ethan Wighton from Tamworth caught two jew, a very respectable 21 and 14 kilos off the North Wall on live mullet; it looks like the boys may have got the wood on their old man this trip – again.
