16/12/05 Weekly Report

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Dec 16, 2005 5:11 pm

I love this time of the year, the fishing moves up a gear, the big pelagic critters are starting to appear in our waters while our town comes alive with holidaymakers.
There have been plenty of whiting off the beaches this week. Front Beach at Trial Bay has good whiting from The Boulders to half-way along to the Jail. Back Beach towards the breakwall is also fishing well. Smoky Beach and Gap Beach have whiting and bream.
There are monster flathead in the river at the moment along the breakwall. Some of these fish are 5kg- plus and it is important to remember you can have only one over 70cm (they are all female so think about letting them go). Lots of whiting up toward Stuarts Point but you have to pick through the small ones. There is a fair bit of dirty water around Clybucca and Rainbow Reach due to opening of the flood gate. Hopefully the bigger tides will clear this quickly. Tailor are about late in the afternoon off the end of the South Wall. Bream have been in their usual haunts around the river boat ramp, river walls and around the oyster leases. Be aware you can’t tie up or fish off an oyster lease; it carries a $500 fine.
It’s all happening outside. Mahi mahi up to 15kg around the FAD, Kingfish around Fish Rock on metal jigs, the occasional snapper off Grassy Head and, dare I say it, one or two spotties have shown up. It should only get better from here.
Watch the bars and check your safety gear.
