Weekly Report 17 Jan 09

Post by Brad » Sat Jan 17, 2009 8:00 am

It was a hit and miss affair last week for the blue water fisherman with water temps down a little and a scattering of bait balls along with the odd ordinary day of sea conditions. Cobia are about in small numbers off the Gaol grounds taking live slimies. There have been a few Small Blacks being hooked up in close and a number free swimming not interested in biting. Fish Rock has so many small King Fish you’re battling to get to the bottom. There have been better kings around Green Island over the last few weeks. The Lighthouse grounds are producing good Flathead if you’re battling to get a feed. Grassy and Scotts Head have had Small Spanish Mackerel as well as the first showing of Spotted Mackerel. The odd Snapper has been caught out of the same location.

The river is fishing well for Flathead in a number of locations, Jerseyville Stuarts Point and around Rainbow Reach. Land based the tavern area and around the cleaning tables at the boat ramp are the go. Legal Bream are a little tougher to find along the Breakwalls. Whiting have reappeared around Kinchela with some crackers amongst them. As far as the Jew Fish go only Schoolies are being caught around the Jerseyville Bridge. Rockhoppers are struggling with a few Bream and the odd Tailor off the ledges with small Kings off the Light House and down to Hat Head. Beach fishing has been productive with nice Whiting coming off Smoky Beach and Gap Beach. There are a lot of Whiting on Main Beach but most are under size while Back beach has good Whiting and the odd Flathead.
Until next week
Paul Martin
