Weekly Report 24 Jan 09

Post by Brad » Sat Jan 24, 2009 12:11 pm

A week of north east winds made it difficult to get outside. There were a few fish for those who took on the uncomfortable conditions. Local fisho Les Palmer hooked a 70 plus kilo Black Marlin on a skirted lure with reports of a few more starting to show up. Spotted Mackerel were caught off Grassy but not in any numbers at this stage. The FAD was producing some small Dolphin Fish and a few good Kings. Fish Rock held some nice Snapper last week in the rough conditions with good numbers of Bonito and Mac Tuna along with thousands of small King Fish. Water temperature is slowly on the increase again with plenty of bait off the bait grounds.

Flathead are the fish to target in the river again with some big lizards coming in over the last week. Drifting the north wall on an incoming tide has proved productive using herring, mullet, White Bait or Anchovies. Good Flatties have been through the Cut to Stuarts Point and down to Jerseyville around the shallows. Whiting are in patches in the river with reports from Fredo, Smithtown and down to Kinchela. Closer to home we have had Whiting around the trawler boats at Jerseyville or in front of the Tavern next to the rescue boats. Good Bream are rare amongst the small ones. Rock hoppers who are putting in the hours on the ledges are getting a few Tailor and Bonito with one or two good Bream. There have been a lot of fishos on the beaches over the last few weeks for mixed results. Whiting are few and far between on Smoky with the odd Bream and Dart taking your bait. Gap Beach has had nice Tailor, Bream and Dart as well. This time of the year it’s worth casting into the shallow white water for Flathead.
Until next week
Paul Martin
