Weekly Report 29/1/09

What a difference a week can make! There is a nice patch of warm water out there that’s full of bait, combine that with great sea conditions last week and sure enough you have fish. Good numbers of spotted mackerel have shown up off Grassy Head, most around 5 or 6 kilo. Spanish are also being caught but most are small, about 4 to 5 kilos. Local Joe Dall’acqua hooked a good yellowfin just over 10kilo with plenty of smaller ones about. Black marlin have been hooked in close with the best reported fish going 90kg off the charter boat Sea Scout. The FAD has some small mahi mahi around with the odd bull amongst them. Cobia are on the bite off the Jail Grounds with the biggest around 27 kilos. There is plenty of bait out there at the moment with some monster bonito as well.
Smoky Beach is fishing well for whiting, bream and dart with some crackers coming in along the beach on live worms. Gap Beach had a few tailor earlier in the week with some nice whiting as well. Rockhoppers are getting a few tailor but with all the baitfish that are in close, anything is possible.
The river is fishing well for whiting from the mouth all the way up to Smithtown. Some nice bream have been caught along walls late afternoon into the night. Flathead were again on the bite up to Stuarts Point along with some good whiting. Jerseyville has been producing flathead, bream and whiting around the bridge with the odd GT still about.
Just a reminder, if there are bins around the cleaning table at Back Creek boat ramp, please use them for your big fish frames rather than leave them in the shallow water of the boat ramp.
