Weekly Report 6/2/09

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Feb 06, 2009 2:26 pm

This is the time of the year all blue-water fishos look forward to, and South West Rocks is firing on cue. Good numbers of black marlin to 50kg are being hooked in close off the Jail with the odd fish to 80kg amongst them. There is bait everywhere and with the water around 26°, it doesn’t’ get any better. Cobia are about again off the Jail, the bad news is they swim with sharks and they’re having a bite before you get to it to the boat. Bonito are in good numbers with fishos saying some of them are the biggest they have seen. Yellowfin are down to Fish Rock where you will also get kingfish. Off Grassy and Scotts head small Spanish mackerel are being caught along with good numbers of spotted mackerel with most guys slow-trolling live slimies. If you are chasing snapper they are out in about 80m with some nice pearl perch coming in as well. The FAD is working for dolphin fish with some up to 10 kilos. On the down side our bar is at its ugliest with the nor’-easters so take care.
While it is full on outside, the river has slowed down. Flathead are being caught with most just on legal around Jerseyville, Rainbow Reach and along the breakwall with some nice fish in front of the tavern. Bream are around but are finicky and taking live worms and whitebait. Whiting are up Kinchela and Smithtown again with some nice fish amongst them. Stuarts Point has some nice whiting and flathead on the run-out tide.
Smoky Beach has been quiet with fishos battling to get a feed out of the surf. The Hat Head end is your best bet with some good bream coming in at the end of last week. Back Beach has a few whiting and the odd flathead. Rockhoppers have been getting the odd tailor and the odd small king off Hat Head.
