Weekly Report 13/2/09

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Feb 13, 2009 12:29 pm

It has been a little tougher to find fish over the last week with water temperatures down in close to about 20° seeming to have shut down the mackerel action off Grassy and Scotts. No reports of any last week. Snapper and pearl perch were caught in around 80m, while off the FAD where it was a little warmer mahi mahi were playing the game with the odd king around the same area. There were a number of cobia caught through the week, most around Luke Winter’s 18.5kg fish on a live slimy off the Jail Grounds. Sharks are still a problem, especially around the cobia, with the odd fish taken before it gets to the boat. There was the odd marlin hooked but few and far between in the green water. The majority of bait has been available around where the buoys were. They got a few snapper around Fish Rock along with heaps of rat kings, as usual. If you’re battling to get a feed out there are flathead are working off the Lighthouse Grounds.
Andrew Fox fished the Jew Bite off the wall with pilchards for a monster 8kg flathead heavily roeed up, photographed and safely released back to the water. Good bream were again hard to find with the better fish on the tide changes using ultra-light gear. Whiting are around the sandflats taking worms and nippers.
Rockhoppers are picking up a few tailor off the ledges. Bream and trevally around a kilo are also making the bucket. Whiting are not in good numbers along Smoky Beach but some of the few being caught are crackers. Bream and dart are in the surf with the odd flathead coming in. Gap Beach has a few bream and whiting and some tailor off the north end.
