Weekly Report 27/2/09

Things are slowly starting to clean up outside with some strong hot currents heading south. We had dirty green water out as far as the FAD so the fishing was not spectacular. There was a marked improvement late last week with some nice mahi mahi around the FAD while pearl perch were in about 80m off Grassy Head with the odd snapper coming in. It did not matter where you were out there, sharks were stealing your bait. Kayakers are in town at the moment fishing the Jail Grounds with a couple of guys catching cobia to 26 kilos. Yellowfin are on the bite again with the odd one over 10 kilo. Fish Rock had some good snapper earlier in the week close in while the kings are just on legal, apart from a few big ones. Live bait has been reasonably easy to find off the Jail with good numbers of bonito around as well. Spanish and spotties were on the bite off Coffs so they should return with the warm currents.
Right now all the beaches are firing with the best catches of whiting all summer happening on Smoky Beach with some good bream and monster dart as well taking worms and pipis. Gap Beach has whiting, bream and the odd flathead and tailor while Main Beach is fishing well around the Boulders and Horseshoe Bay rocks.
Rockhoppers are catching kilo-plus trevally off the Jail along with some big bream like Bob Nip’s 1.13kg (cleaned) beauty. Some nice tailor have been about off the rocks jumping on metal spinners and pilchards.
I would leave the river alone for a week to clear, especially around Belmore mainly due to the council opening the flood gates in an already dirty waterway. Fishing the river mouth has been productive for some nice bream and any number of shovel nose sharks.
