Weekly Report 6/3/09

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Mar 06, 2009 5:26 pm

We have had a lot of boats here fishing offshore over the last week, covering a heap of ocean for sadly very little results. The water conditions have been slowly improving, there is bait everywhere over the bait grounds and some big fish sounding up but they are not on the bite. A visiting crew fished Grassy out wide for a few snapper up to 2 kilo. The FAD has broken away again; Fisheries have been notified and have advised a 4- to 5-week replacement time. Green Island fished well for some big bream with plenty of small kings around to take the bait. Striped and mac tuna are about in good numbers with the odd small yellowfin. Fish Rock has been slow apart from a few kings and snapper. Big nannygai are being caught off the wider reefs with the odd pearl perch.
Even though our river is still dirty, flathead have started to fire up along the breakwalls. We had a crew from Taree last week who had great success using blade lures and Gulp plastics along the walls with consistent numbers each session with all released. Kinchela is still a write-off so pick spots closer to the mouth on an incoming tide. Flathead are in good numbers off the tavern down to the boat ramp. The odd GT and estuary cod are about as well. There are still plenty of small sharks at the end of the wall.
Smoky Beach is fishing well for some nice whiting. Good dart and bream are also in the gutters. Gap Beach has had flathead off the north side beach with plenty of whiting in the whitewater. Back and Main beaches have a few whiting and the odd bream. Rockhoppers are getting some big bream, a few tailor and the whisper of the odd salmon.
