Weekly Report 13/3/09

Where have all the pelagics gone? There has been a heap of live bait about but not a sniff of a marlin or a cobia last week. There was plenty of tuna action with striped and mac tuna about with the odd small yellowfin. Fish Rock has had kingfish with a few good ones amongst them with a couple of fair snapper coming in. Early in the week one crew did well out very wide with a few cod on the boat. Grassy gave up a few spotted mackerel about a week ago so hopefully we will get another run of these after the rain. Nannygai and morwong are about in good numbers with the odd pearl perch with them. As advised last week, our FAD has broken away and will be a month or so before it is replaced.
The river is producing some nice fish at the moment, even with the dirty water we have now. Working the breakwalls with live bait has been productive for big flathead with the South wall working best. You wouldn’t swim in the river unless you wanted to play with the sharks. Plenty have been hooked over the last week amongst the jewfish guys. One fisho wasn’t quick enough to land his jew off the wall and ended up with a 4 kilo head only. There are plenty of under size bream about with the odd kilo-plus unit amongst them.
The rockhoppers are pulling in some nice tailor off the ledges with the swell up last week. Trevally and bream are about in smaller numbers. Smoky Beach had a few tailor out of the surf last week with coming into first light most productive. There are still whiting and bream along the beach but not like the numbers of a few weeks ago. Main Beach where it meets Front Creek has had some nice whiting early morning.
