Weekly Report 27/3/09

It’s a little disappointing out there at the moment; this time of year should be going off with pelagic fish. We had a run of a few spotted mackerel late last week off Grassy with most of those caught good fish. One or two Spanish have come out of the same area. Jewfish have been on the bite off the reefs before Grassy with some really nice fish coming in (remember only two over 70cm with a bag of 5). Snapper and smaller pearl perch are out a little wider with good numbers of morwong. The FAD is out there again in it’s normal location but last week fair mahi mahi were in closer, about a kilometre out of the river bar. Good tailor have been around Green Island up to a few kilo with some yellowfin among them. Fish Rock has slowed up a little, with the kings visible but fussy about what they eat. There were the odd snapper, mack tuna and yellowfin caught around this location.
Smoky Beach has fished well for tailor again this week with most caught first light on pillies and garfish. Dart are about in good numbers along the beach while whiting are getting harder to find. Gap Beach also has tailor, bream and the odd flathead. Rockhoppers are getting their fair share of tailor off most ledges with a few tuna about.
Jerseyville bridge is producing some school jew around the pylons with plastic baits working well or whole live worms. Some nice bream have come off the oyster racks with the odd whiting out of the shallows. Flathead are still in good numbers with some nice fish coming from the front of the tavern. Sharks are still about at the end off the wall taking strip or live bait. The breakwall has been producing good bream up and down the wall. Mullet and blackfish are starting to trickle into the river, lets hope we have a good season over the next few months.
