Weekly Report 3/4/09

Bugger! Just as it was starting to show some signs of improvement outside, the heavens open and it blows the sea up to 3m. There were reports of wahoo, black marlin and cobia caught the day before the deluge, but now we’re back to brown water and frustrated fishermen. The seas are slowly abating but we will have a dangerous bar to contend with for a week or so.
The river upstream is a right off with a lot of rubbish racing down in a continually running-out tide. Towards the end of the breakwall is about the only productive area to fish. There have been some big bream off the wall going crazy on herring. There is no reason jewfish would not be on the bite at the mouth, just as they were last fresh a month or so ago. Killalure Jew 150 lures worked a treat on these fish in the dirty water.
Smoky Beach is still reasonably clean and tailor have been about in good numbers on garfish and pilchards. Bream and dart have been along the beach with a few whiting on worms. If you are heading down to Gap Beach, check the tracks down to the beach, they were out the other day. Front Beach, even though it’s dirty, is producing a few bream around the boulders with some chopper tailor.
Rockhoppers are making their way back out to the ledges as the sea settles, where there should be some good tailor and bream in the whitewater.
It is a brand new year kicking off for the Sea Breeze Hotel Fishing Club. Congratulations to all the ‘beat the board’ winners over the last year and we look forward to weighing in some nice fish this year. Comps on the first weekend of each month voucher prize value has increased so for an entry fee of $2 for adults and 50c for juniors you can win some great prizes. It’s worth the effort and it’s open to everybody, enter here at the shop or the Sea Breeze Hotel with the entry cut-off Saturday noon.
