Weekly Report 17/4/09

Blue water fishermen finally have something to smile about with some good fish coming in over the last week. Even though the water is still dirty there were fish caught on the northern reefs. Snapper, pearl perch and trag have been caught from Grassy Head up to the reefs off Nambucca. Down south plenty of mack tuna about while there have been some big tailor in close around Green Island. Big bream have been around this same location, taking fresh bait. Fish Rock has fished well for kingfish with a good number over legal size. The odd small snapper and a hefty cobia were also pulled out from the Rock last week. There were a few marlin hooked out on the wide grounds with a few striped and a big blue among them. Live bait is still tough to get out of the dirty water with most coming out of the grounds around Jim’s and Col’s holes.
The river looks horrible but it is producing some nice fish. There are plenty of bream about along the walls taking just about anything you throw at them. Flathead have been in good numbers taking pilchards, mullet and live herring. The end of the breakwall is firing at the moment with some nice jew coming in on the full tide. We are now stocking Berkley Mungo lures which have been smashing these jewfish. Jerseyville is producing flathead and some school jew around the bridge out of the brown water.
Smoky Beach is going off, with some fantastic whiting coming in along the beach on live worms. There are plenty of bream and dart being hooked with the odd flathead and tailor as well. Gap Beach is also producing some good fish.
Rockhoppers are getting their share of some thumper tailor off the ledges with some nice bream and the odd drummer about.
