Weekly Report 1/5/09

Post by Tony Zann » Fri May 01, 2009 10:10 am

What a difference a week makes! Nice blue water about 23° or 24° and, more importantly, we have fish again. We had a few marlin on the bite last week as well as a return of some dolphin fish around the Dot. The guys from Lambton Fishing Club were here last week and had some success off the reefs around Grassy with snapper up to 6 kilos. Soft plastics were working a treat early morning and with new colours to be introduced this Winter, it’s only going to get better. Some nice pearlies are out a little wider for the guys that took on the swell out there. Fish Rock fished well for Kingfish last week with the bigger units smashing metal jigs. Bonito and mack tuna are out there in good numbers. Baitfish are there but are tough to catch.
The river is producing some nice flathead with quite a few around 3kg. The breakwall has been the hot spot for these lizards. Bream are also on the bite out of the same location. The water is slowly clearing around the upper reaches so the guys fishing the racks caught some nice bream and the odd whiting and flathead. There were no reports of jewfish last week. Blackfish are just around the corner so dust off your gear and hope the beach haulers let some through.
There were some big greenback tailor caught last week with the best, Phil Saul’s 5.46kg (cleaned) monster, hooked off Hat Head. Tailor were being pulled out off most ledges from the Jail down to the lighthouse.
Beach fishermen struggled on Smoky Beach for a few whiting, bream and dart with better fish down towards Hat Head. Gap Beach is fishing well for tailor and a few bream. Watch the track down to Gap, there is a fair amount of wash-out damage.
Special of the week: Shimano 6500 BaitRunner $239.95 (only 5 left).
