Weekly Report 25/6/09

Post by Tony Zann » Thu Jun 25, 2009 5:16 pm

Not much has changed from last week, brown water as far as you can see. As far as outside fishing goes, boats started getting out at the end of the week for pretty ordinary results. A few boats fished Scotts Head for some snapper and the odd tusk fish. One crew went about 20km straight out from the Jail leatherjackets. These fish are in huge numbers from about 60m but at the end of the day when the other fish are scarce they are a good-tasting nuisance. Over the next week or so there will be some big tides, hopefully clearing the water colour.
It is the same story in the Macleay River – chocolate brown water running out to sea. The good news is the bream are still on the bite along the breakwall in close with the best tide a run in to full. The jewfish boys are down there throwing all sorts of lures for plenty of schoolies and the odd thumper. Blackfish are still a no-show off the breakwall with the only reports of blackfish are coming from the creek at Hat Head and a few up at Stuarts Point. There was the odd flathead off the walls and mud flats but few and far between. Gladstone and Smithtown have had some bream but the water is putrid up-river.
Beach fishing has been fair with some nice bream coming in. Smoky Beach has had strong side currents and some very high tides last week making it tough to fish. Not much happening on Main Beach and Back Beach.
Rockhoppers were kept alert with some big swells fishing for a few tailor, bream and drummer.
The Sea Breeze Hotel Fishing Club has its monthly comp on this weekend, $2 for adults and 50c for juniors, open to anybody. Great prizes available so have a go and enter here at the shop or at the hotel.
On special this week: 15% of NOU Italian-made tackle boxes.
