Weekly Reports 17/7/09

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Jul 17, 2009 2:18 pm

Conditions were good for the first week of school holidays with the water slowly getting back to normal after the wet. Snapper fishers had mixed success off Grassy and Scotts with some crews doing better than others. Most reds were pan size but a few were up around 4kg in about 30m. There were a few trag caught during the afternoon sessions along with some pearl perch. Big numbers of leatherjackets are still chopping gear off on the wider reefs. Fish Rock produced a few good kings over last week with a Red or two as well. Sea bream are around Green Island with the odd tailor and bonito taking garfish. Bar Cod are about again in the deep water, about 300m, with Vic and his crew from Black Rat hooking a monster with some very respectable kings as well.
After a promising start to a late blackfish season the end of last week went quiet along the walls with the shoulder-to-shoulder fishos getting sonly 3 or 4 each. It is a lot tougher getting good bream towards the mouth with most of the action happening from the Cut up-river to Jerseyville, where they are still getting schoolies around the bridge. There were a few GTs caught out of the same location. Flathead are always tougher to excite during the winter but check the shallows where they like to get the warmer water.
Beach fishers are struggling to get a feed with the odd bream and dart on Smoky Beach with the access cut off to Hat Head on high tide. Gap Beach has a few salmon and tailor while Back Beach gave up a few whiting and bream for one holiday maker. Rockhoppers are getting some bream, drummer and only the odd tailor and salmon.
New product alert: Berkley powerbait MF40 soft vibes. Bream and Flathead won’t know what hit them, come in and have a look.
