Weekly Report 30/7/09

Post by Tony Zann » Thu Jul 30, 2009 5:25 pm

Another week of beautiful weather and calm oceans again had blue-water fishos out with some good results. Grassy Head and further north to Scotts and Nambucca seem to be popular with plenty of good snapper about. Over the week we have weighed in some cracker venus tusk fish while there have been some nice pearlies and morwong out of the same locations. There are a heap of leatherjackets out a little wider, all the way down to Rocks In Line. Fish Rock is fishing well for kings just over legal and a few small snapper. Black Rock has also had a few snapper pulled out of there last week.
What’s happened to the blackfish run this season? There seem to be only a few travellers coming in mixing it with the resident fish. Guys are saying the end of the run-out tide is more productive but no one is bagging out at the moment. Some fishos have done well along the walls of the Cut Through. Nice bream have been caught at the end of the wall first thing in the morning and then you are harassed by the little ones. Up-river where the water is still dirty better bream are more frequently caught. Soapy jew are in good numbers around Jerseyville but there are more throwbacks than keepers. In front of the tavern produced some nice flathead on herring and mullet.
Smoky Beach is not firing at all; your best chance is an early morning or late afternoon tailor or salmon. Back Beach has a few bream and the odd flathead with Main Beach giving up some small whiting.
Rock Hoppers are getting the odd tailor on spinners off the Jail and the Lighthouse. Good blackfish are being caught on cabbage and weed while one or two drummer have been landed. All reports from Hat Head are dismal but when they net the opening to the creek every second night, no wonder it’s like it is.
