Weekly Report 21/8/09

Fishos struggled in almost perfect conditions last week to get a feed outside and elsewhere. Michael Cassar fished The Dot for a nice 7.5kg kingfish and a few snapper up to 2kg. Denis Morton fished his favourite spot for a couple of jew up to 9kg. Grassy fished OK for squire and the odd pearl perch and morwong with plenty of time for a snooze between fish. Nigel Soper from Kempsey fished wide off Grassy for some thumper morwong and a few snapper. I said last week the leatherjackets were thinning out – sorry about that! I have been corrected numerous times. Fish Rock has had a few kings and snapper again this week but with not much current, it is tough fishing. Tuna boats made an appearance in the bay looking for bait, hopefully not a sign of things to come.
Late Last week there was a massive school of blackfish turn up in the river and Back Creek so don’t rack up your blackfish gear just yet, there might be a late run. There were some nice bream caught towards the end of the breakwall but it was slim pickings. A crew of visitors fished the flats towards Stuarts Point for some fair flathead in the shallow water with one guy having great success with the drop bear 80mm Squidgy Fish. Down at the river boat ramp there were a few bream and the odd flathead coming in.
Salmon were on the bite off the rocks last week with some monster fish getting hooked. What a shame the tailor are not in these numbers, but still there was the odd one caught. The guys chasing bream off the rocks have struggled over the last few weeks. Last week on Smoky Beach it was even tough to catch a worm. There were a few bream, dart and salmon but it’s hard work and with Gap Beach the same story, we’re all looking forward to the spring whiting run.
