Weekly Report 11/9/09

When you are out there wetting a line this weekend, appreciate the view because that will be the highlight of your day! It has been hard to catch a fish but if you put in the hours, you will get a feed. We have had a late run of blackfish, not big numbers or any size but enough for a feed. The end of the breakwall was the place to be for some big salmon taking pilchards. There was the odd bream along the wall but the keepers were few and far between. Ken Bissett and John Passmore fished the North Wall along from the hut for two jewfish going 20 and 15 kilos using live herring just on dark. Schoolies are about in good numbers with a lot just on legal. One or two flathead have been pulled out of the river with the boaties doing a little better.
Rockhoppers are struggling with only a few bream about among the salmon. There were a few tailor off the Jail but south to Hat Head the numbers were better. Not much better for the beach fishos with Smoky Beach giving up a few dart, bream and the odd whiting. Gap Beach has had some nice salmon, as has Back Beach.
There were a lot of fishos coming back to the ramp empty-handed through the week. Live bait is hard to find so you might not want to rely on them. We had reports from Grassy of a few snapper and pearlies being caught but it has been slow going. Fish Rock has rat kings but with still no current to mention so it will probably stay that way for the short term. Leatherjackets seem to be thinning out which is a shame, at least you could be guaranteed a feed. There is a positive, it has been reported to us there was a little pelagic action on the shelf in some green-looking water.
