Weekly Report 17/9/09

The river has been on the improve over the last week with better catches of bream off the breakwall with pilchards, whitebait and chicken gut working well. Big salmon have been caught out of the same location so hang on if they take your bream bait. Whiting are making a return to the river with a few around Clybucca and Stuarts Point. The shallows and drop-offs are producing flathead from the boatshed to Jerseyville. One or two blackfish were caught along the wall but I would say it’s all but over for another year. There were whispers of nice jewfish off the North Wall at night.
Kempsey Bass Club had their annual Bass Catch weekend with most fish being caught around the lower Kempsey area rather than up river, with good numbers of fish recorded and all released.
Beach fishers and rockhoppers are doing it tough with some salmon off the rocks and a few bream and dart on Smoky Beach with the odd whiting feeding on live worms. Gap Beach has had big salmon and a few whiting.
Trying to get a feed outside has been a struggle with most fishos heading north coming home empty-handed. The Dot had some morwong and the odd snapper but you need to work for them. It seems the guys heading out wider to 60m-plus have been more successful with snapper, pearl perch and some smaller nannygai. Fish Rock has been slow with a few small kings but nothing to get excited about yet. Jim’s Hole is holding live bait down deep.
