Weekly Report 16/10/09

Same story, different week: Winds that would blow a dog off a chain and blue-water fishermen chomping at the bit to get out and wet a line. A few of the charter crews braved the conditions for only a handful of table fish. One positive result was some nice kingfish coming off Fish Rock with one or two around 15kg. No one was fishing out wide due to the conditions but the websites are suggesting some warmer water out there so hopefully we will have some action shortly. The few boats that headed north picked up a few snapper and the odd pearlie after a bit of work.
Not much luck for the land-based river fishos but a different story if you can get a tinnie up in the shallows for some quality flathead. Spencers Creek has been a hot spot for lizards with most guys saying the soft plastics are working well. Rainbow Reach also has flathead and some nice school jews coming in as well. The bream have been a little tougher to get hold of with plenty of undersize fish being caught. There were a few keepers caught of the breakwall along with some monster salmon but it’s tough in the crystal clear water. Big jewfish scales were found on the cleaning table on the river through the week, because it is like the secret service with fishermen catching big jewfish at least we know they’re about. If you can find some live pike you are in with a chance.
One lucky holidaymaker cleaned up on good bream on the north end of Smoky Beach using pilchards. Salmon have been passing through in huge schools but there is not much running with them. Gap Beach has a few whiting and bream but it is patchy as well.
The rockhoppers have just about given the game away, frustrated with the lack of quality fish. Hang in there, it has to come good soon.
