Weekly Report 22/10/09

Post by Tony Zann » Thu Oct 22, 2009 12:51 pm

There were a few fish about last week with one or two quality snapper off the northern reefs in shallow water. The water is slowly warming on the closer grounds with some better water out wide. Fisheries have the FAD back in place, about 100m south of its last location and if you need the co-ordinates, visit the fisheries website or call in at the shop. There were rumours of a few cobia in about 22° water. Fish Rock again has been loaded with rat kings, most undersize but fun on light gear. The charter boats have been picking up some nice snapper and pearl perch. There have been reports of good numbers of bonito in close off the rocks.
The river is producing some nice bream again, not in big numbers but some quality fish. The odd flathead on whitebait and anchovies on small ganged hooks. There was a little more whiting action last week in the river, the fish are not of any size yet but it is a good sign. There were reports of school jew around the gates at Kinchela with some nice fish.
Smoky Beach has had a few fish with some bream and whiting starting to show. Gap Beach also has a few whiting with some salmon. Some positive news off Crescent Head: big schools of tailor have come in so let’s hope they are heading north because there has not been much around off the ledges.
This weekend the Seabreeze Hotel fishing club’s monthly competition is on. There are great prizes and for $2 for adults and 50c for juniors, it’s cheap fun. Entry forms are available at the shop or the hotel with an entry deadline of midday Saturday.
