Weekly Report 30/10/09

It has been a long wait but finally there were some nice fish caught last week. Quality snapper were bagged in some shallow water off Scotts Head with positive results off Grassy head. The water temp is increasing and pearl perch, snapper and the odd trag are starting to appear again on the northern reefs. Fish Rock is alive with rat kings taking almost anything while the bigger kings have been in fair numbers. Further south around Black Rock there were a few snapper caught and one or two cobia to the boat. Green Island is producing some quality bream and tailor. Live bait was a little easier to pick up last week.
There were much better reports from Smoky Beach last week with some very good bream coming in with plenty of dart and the odd whiting. Live worms and pipis are working well. Gap Beach has had a few salmon on the north end with the odd bream and whiting as well. Main Beach and Back Beach are fishing for the odd whiting. Not brilliant off the rocks with only a few salmon, tailor and bream but it has been hard to get anything excited.
Last week saw a group of spearfishers spearing big female flathead along the breakwall. Unfortunately, as we do not have a Fisheries office in town this slaughter will continue. Just question this when next you’re checked for your fishing licence. There were some fair bream caught along the wall up to the boat shed but most were throwbacks. Flathead are about but not in big numbers. Try the grounds off the tavern, there have been some nice fish landed there. One or two whiting on the flats up from the Jerseyville bridge and if you can get around the trawlers with live worms you should do OK. As the water dirties up after the rain more fish should be on the bite.
