Weekly Report 5/11/09

Post by Tony Zann » Thu Nov 05, 2009 3:15 pm

Conditions were not great last week but there will always be fishos wetting a line. Very strong currents made it difficult out on the wider reefs so most of the action, (or lack of it) through the week was in close. There were a few snapper landed with the best of 3.77kg by Greg Allen taking out the biggest snapper in the Seabreeze Hotel fishing comp on the weekend. We had reports of good jewfish caught up north with a few pearl perch. Kingfish were around Fish Rock again last week but the current has been ripping through. Water has been around 23° to 24°, cobalt blue and plenty of bait around so it should not be long before it absolutely goes off.
Last week I mentioned the spearfishers killing the big flathead along the breakwall. A concerned fisho took a picture of the spearos and the number plate of their car, sent it to Fisheries and charges were laid. Moving on, bream have made a return along the wall with some nice fish coming in. Jewfish have been harder to get with only a few reported along the wall on the bottom of the run-out tide. The dirty water is playing havoc with the whiting but it should clear by the weekend. Just-legal flathead are in good numbers around Jerseyville, Clybucca and Stuarts Point.
Smoky Beach has had a mixed bag with reports of some nice bream and whiting, although not in good numbers, with a few salmon as well. Back Beach has been quiet apart from the odd small whiting. Gap Beach has had a few tailor off the northern end.
Rockhoppers have not had much to celebrate of late but a few tailor started to show up last weekend to whet their appetites.
