Weekly Report 4/12/09

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Dec 04, 2009 2:29 pm

Colder currents towards the end of last week slowed the bite down for the blue water fishermen. In close was a better option with a few snapper off Scotts. One charter boat fished north for some nice jew and the odd snapper and pearlies. Fish Rock this week was loaded with rat kings again but no reports of legal fish. Black Rock fired up with some big snapper. Bonito are about in big numbers from Fish Rock to the jail in close along the rocks.
Flathead were in better numbers in the river. Live bait has been a popular choice but the new Gulp pilchard colour 4” minnow has been slaying the big lizards in the shallow water. Bream have been harder to get with a night session your best option. A couple of nice jewfish landed last week, one in particular around 22kg late afternoon on mullet. Nathan Johnson from Frederickton was just as excited with his 4.5kg 102cm school jew using prawn bait caught in front of the tavern. Whiting are around Clybucca, Stuarts Point and Jerseyville.
The breakwall fishermen battled last week apart from a few bream and flathead. There has been a few big shovelies about along the wall.
Beach fishing has been tough with all the wind but you should get a feed if you persevere. Smoky has had whiting, bream and some big dart in a strong sweep along the beach. Main Beach is still producing whiting but watch the size limit of 27cm. Back Beach has whiting and the odd flathead. Off the rocks bonito are in good numbers, bream off the jail and jewfish under the lighthouse.
Don’t forget the annual Seabreeze Hotel fishing clubs huge fishing comp on January 16 and 17, great prizes to be won, more info to follow.
