23/1/06 Weekly Report

Post by Tony Zann » Tue Jan 24, 2006 8:50 am

It’s all happening here at the Rocks, as it does this time of the year. Big fish are about but we need the weather to be a little consistent.
Spotties have made a welcome return to Grassy heads, moving between the close and middle grounds with the biggest weighed here at the shop going 8.660kg cleaned. Bait schools are all over the place at the moment with plenty of marlin hook-ups to get you excited. Cobia are here in good numbers close in front of the Jail taking live slimies with the best this season Todd Fisher’s 35kg cracker. Good yellowfin are coming in and fair kingfish are also being caught around Fish Rock.
Finally the weed is leaving the beaches around town but I think the fish are leaving as well with only a few whiting and bream coming in out of the surf.
The river is a little tough at the moment due to the dirty water coming down. Your best options is drifting the breakwalls for flathead and bream or find some structure like oyster racks for bream. Whiting are also about on live worms.
265 people contested the Seabreeze Hotel’s huge fishing comp on the 14th and 15th of January. Congratulations to Geoff Gardner with his 5.315kg snapper and young Ben Guest with his .870g bream, both good enough to take out the $500 prize for their fish. Well done to all the organisers and sponsors for another very successful competition.
Take care on the bars.
