Weekly Reports 15/1/10

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Jan 15, 2010 4:00 pm

We have some fickle currents at the moment with some days running north and other days running south, playing havoc with the water temperature. There have been a few small black marlin in close but the bigger blues are out on the wide grounds in reasonable numbers. Grounds off Hat Head are producing some blacks with one or two wahoo starting to show. Fish Rock is fishing well for kingfish with the bigger units jumping on the larger knife jigs. Black Rock has had a little action with snapper and the odd king. Rocks in Line is producing snapper, pearl perch and trag in fair numbers. Grassy Head has a few snapper but reports are that first light is best and a change of tide even better. The FAD is working for dolphin fish but no bulls yet.
It looks like we have had another brown through the river coming from way upstream but it is not putting the fish off. Flathead have been in good numbers towards the mouth of the river taking a variety of soft plastics while whitebait and mullet are working well. There are plenty of bream along the walls but pulling a legal one out has been tough. Whiting are in good numbers with Stuarts Point, Clybucca and Jerseyville the hot spots. Try pumping some nippers or use live worms to get these fish excited. Jewies will be more active on the moon toward the end of the month in the dirty water.
Smoky Beach has been full of dart with a few whiting and bream coming out of the surf. Gap Beach has had whiting but most fishos have battled there. Main and Back beaches have whiting but most are undersize.
Rockhoppers are still struggling with a few bonito and bream. One holidaymaker found some cabbage on the rocks, hooked it up and pulled in 4 blackfish one after the other.
