Weekly Report 22/1/10

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Jan 22, 2010 9:10 am

We have been waiting all summer for this: the Spanish mackerel are here. Late last week they were on the bite off Grassy and Scotts in good numbers from around 5 kilos to 20-odd kilos. No sign of spotties at this stage but they should not be far away. There has been a few snapper about in the same location with the odd pearl perch. Good dolphin fish have been around the FAD in some great-looking water. Cobia are in front of the jail with a couple of them caught while Black Rock has given up a few as well. There were some good kingfish around Fish Rock up to about 10 kilos taking knife jigs. Small mac tuna and bonito are all over the place from the jail to the rock. Slimies were big late last week but great bait for the big Spanish. There has been the odd small black in front in close while the big blues are out at the canyons wide.
The river is producing some big flathead with some around 5 kilos and it’s great to see these beauties go back to the water un-filleted! Whiting are about in good numbers in the river as the water slowly clears. Bream are still hard to get over size.
Another very successful Seabreeze Hotel fishing comp has been run and won with biggest bream winner Chris Hill with his .895kg specimen. Congratulations to Cory Mitchell taking out the biggest snapper weighing 3.370kg.
Rockhoppers are having some fun with all the bonito about with some smaller tailor off the rocks around the Jail and the Lighthouse. Smoky has fished well for whiting along the beach with a few bream and dart taking live worms. Main Beach has whiting in good numbers around to the Jail.
