Weekly Report 11/2/10

Post by Tony Zann » Thu Feb 11, 2010 3:11 pm

With the seas finally calming and the bar reasonable, fishos made the best of it and wet a line. There were no reports of any billfish in close or out wide last week but given the water quality and temperature, it does not surprise. Mahi mahi up to 15kg were about the FAD in good numbers with just about everyone getting a feed. Small snapper, the odd pearl perch and plenty of morwong were the story off the Grassy Heads reefs with no sign of the Spanish mackerel of a few weeks ago. Rocks In Line produced a few snapper and pearlies while Fish Rock is loaded again with kingfish with some quality fish among them. Frigate mackerel and bonito are in good numbers but as far as live bait goes, slimies were tough to get in the dirty water. Let’s hope the current changes direction and runs downhill to produce some quality pelagics.
Shore-based river fishos have struggled over the week with the odd bream and flathead coming in off the walls out of the dirty water. There were a few nice flathead caught drifting the North Wall with a few whiting about as well. Flathead are on the drop-offs around Clybucca and Stuarts with a lot of undersize lizards around at the moment. Another 2m bull shark was caught in the river last week, they do like the conditions so keep an eye out. Good numbers of whiting about in the shallow water.
There was some good fishing on Smoky Beach after the big seas with some quality whiting coming in. Bream and the odd school jew have also been along beach with one or two big shovelnose sharks. Main and Back beaches have some whiting.
Rockhoppers are getting in to a few nice tailor on pilchards with plenty of bonito and frigate mackerel off the rocks.
