Weekly Report 19/2/10

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Feb 19, 2010 4:50 pm

Last week we had just fair conditions on the water but the good news, towards the end of the week a long-time-coming current heading south slowly lifted the water temps, which sent the Spanish Mackerel back on the bite. The odd spottie was caught off Grassy but there is a lot of water between them. One crew fished out wide for a nice black marlin around the 120 kilo mark and 4 bull mahi mahi, smallest around 18 kilo. Out at the FAD smaller dolphin fish are there in good numbers with the odd king. There were only on or two small blacks in close to the Jail but with this warming sea current this will fire up. Fish Rock is fishing well for kingfish with some good numbers caught even though they are just on legal. Bait is plentiful with stacks of slimies and bonito. Fishing the reefs has been fair with a few snapper up north, pearl perch out wider around 60 fathoms and good nannygai on the bottom.
Smoky Beach has had some nice whiting in the whitewater with a few dart about as well. One or two tailor have been caught along the beach. Whiting are on Main Beach taking live worms. Gap Beach is fishing well for whiting, bream and the odd tailor.
Rockhoppers have been getting some nice tailor, good numbers of bonito and the odd frigate mackerel.
The river is still dirty on the run out tide but it is slowly clearing. Flathead are in good numbers with live mullet and herring working a treat. Along the Breakwall bream have been on the bite but there are no record breakers. There are quite a few shovelnose sharks taking the jew baits, especially at the end of the wall. School jew have turned up around Jerseyville and a lot of these fish are falling for 4” to 6” plastic baits. There have been good numbers of whiting caught on the rising tide from the Boatshed to Kinchela on live worms and nippers.
