Weekly Report 5/3/10

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Mar 05, 2010 4:12 pm

Ocean conditions have been very ordinary but despite the slop fishos braved the conditions. The boys chasing Spanish mackerel picked up some nice fish off Scotts and Grassy early in the morning with the majority of fish caught on lures, small skirts, Rapalas and Mackerel Maulers, etc. The whole area is alive with bait but some mornings they can be hard to catch. The FAD has some dolphin fish but these can be finicky. Last week we had the Kayakers Club here in force with one brave sole hooking a marlin off the Jail and being towed for a number of kilometres before successfully landing the fish. There have been a few marlin in the warming water (up to 27°). Out wide some big yellowfin hitting skirts. Fish Rock has been slow apart from mac tuna and bonito, even though the water conditions are perfect. There have been a few pearl perch off Hat Head and the odd snapper.
The river is fishing well with some nice bream off the breakwall with some tailor, frigate mackerel and bonito on the end of the wall. David Smith from Newcastle landed a mangrove jack around a kilo. There are still good flathead about with plenty of juvenile bream getting in the way. Whiting are in good numbers throughout the river. Jerseyville bridge has a few flathead and some school jew with good whiting around the trawlers.
Smoky Beach has not been fantastic with only a few whiting and bream. Frigate mackerel are around Main Beach towards the camp grounds using small metal lures to 15g. Gap Beach has a few bream and whiting and the odd flathead.
Rockhoppers are getting some small tailor, bonito and mac tuna off the ledges. For the locals chasing half by quarter metals, they will be in next week.
