Weekly Report 12/3/10

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Mar 12, 2010 3:55 pm

We finally got some warm currents coming through with a few more spotted mackerel being caught during last week off Grassy. Spanish were in reasonable numbers and were taking live baits late last week in the southerly conditions. Snapper were hard to pick up but there was the odd pearl perch. The FAD is producing some nice dolphin fish in the rough conditions out wider. Kingfish have made a return to Fish Rock with some nice fish well over legal coming in. Bonito are about in good numbers with plenty of mac tuna about. There were a couple of 50kg-plus black marlin caught in front of the jail. Hat Head had a good week with some nice cobia caught down south. Live bait availability was mixed but later in the week they were much easier to get.
There were a few mangrove jack caught in the river last week with John Keywood landing a nice 4kg fish under the Jerseyville bridge on live herring. Bream were in good numbers along the breakwall with tailor and bonito on the end off the wall. Good whiting and flathead have been caught in front of the Tavern down to the boatshed. Whiting and bream have been around Clybucca with some nice flathead out of the same area. Mullet are at their early stage of coming in the river with a few blackfish moving with them.
Herring are in good numbers for the live baiters.
There has been a bit of swell on the beaches with some weed coming in. Smoky Beach is fishing well for whiting and a few bream on live worm with some tailor on the north end of the beach taking garfish. Rockhoppers are getting a few tailor and the odd tuna.
