Weekly Report 31/12/10

Let’s hope we have seen the worst of the weather. Over the past few days the bar has been flat with fishos getting out in reasonable comfort. The outside fishing is getting better all the time with good catches of spotted mackerel with the odd Spanish thrown in. They are taking pillies, live bait and lures on the troll. Snapper are about and respond better to a berley trail. Fish up to 7kg have been weighed. The cobia are starting to show along with some good size mahi mahi.
The river has some great flathead, fish the drop-offs with soft plastics or whitebait and you should have fish and chips for dinner. Bream are about but you need to fish light because the water is clear and there is a bit more boat activity around. Jewfish are still with us but have slowed with the fading moon.
Beach fishos are picking up a feed but have to move around the beach and try different holes and gutters, with Smoky and the Gap being the pick. Live worms are the gun baits.
Rockhoppers are starting to see an increase in activity with tailor up to 4kg. As the warm water comes closer it will bring more surface fish to us.
If you are not happy that National Parks has shut another local public facility – the boat ramp at the Jail – ring 6566 6621 and let them know how important it is to you and the town.
So make sure your rods and reel are serviced and ready to go and that your line is new, because it is shaping up for a good season. Remember there are new lifejacket laws now and Waterways are about in force.
