Weekly report 27/1/11

Post by Tony Zann » Thu Jan 27, 2011 3:15 pm

The north-easterly winds played havoc late last week, with the conditions pretty rough out there. The Spanish mackerel reappeared of the reefs around Grassy with a few fish caught around the 6 to 10 kilo mark. There were no signs of any spotties but the water is clearing quickly. Snapper are in good numbers around the Middle Grounds with the odd pearl perch. The current is ripping through out wide, making it tough to fish. In closer near the Jail, Greg Johnson from Armidale fished out of his kayak for a nice 6.5 kilo Spanish that took an X Rap Rapala lure. Fish Rock has had some Spanish action as well along with some nice kingfish and the odd snapper. Yellowfin are about, taking Lively Lures. Hat Head is going off with cobia, Spanish and one or two marlin. Slimies have been tough to get through the week but there are plenty of yakkas.
There have been some nice fish coming from the river breakwall. James Hassett picked up a 4 kilo flathead on herring along with a few bream just on the legal 25cm. Flathead are in good numbers in front of the tavern and taking pilchards, mullet and prawns. Whiting have been on the bite from Jerseyville to Smithtown on live worms and nippers. Stuarts Point is producing good flathead and whiting while bream are around the oysters at Clybucca.
Smoky Beach northern end has been loaded with bluebottles while the north easterlies have been blowing. There have been some nice whiting and dart along the beach. Gap Beach has whiting and bream on the north end while Little Bay has a few whiting as well. There have been some small kings, tuna and the odd tailor about for the rockhoppers.
