Weekly Report 4/2/11

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Feb 04, 2011 4:43 pm

We have had another week of pretty rough conditions outside; there are fish there if you want to put up with the slop. Scotts and Grassy are producing a few Spanish mackerel and a cobia or two. Snapper have been off the reefs with some trag coming in as well. There have been a few cobia in front of the Jail but most of the action is off Hat Head, where there has been the odd spotty, Spanish Mackerel and mahi mahi. Unfortunately Fisheries has shut down Fish Rock and Green Island for bottom fishing, bait fishing and jigging. The only method allowed is trolling a lure or spinning non-sinking lures in a 500m circle around the islands. Let’s hope a change of government next month brings a better recreational future.
There are some great flathead in the river and with an abundant supply of herring, this should continue. Guys fishing the North Wall are having good success with these lizards on the change of the tide. School jew are in good numbers along the walls with some nice fish around Jerseyville and Kinchela being taken on worm baits. If you don’t get a jew you are assured of a whiting out of these areas. Clybucca has a few whiting and bream while through the Cut to Stuarts Point, whiting and flathead are in good numbers.
There has been some action on the beaches. Smoky has whiting, dart and bream while jewfish around 5 to 6 kilo have come out of the surf towards Hat Head. One or two tailor have been caught off the north end of Gap Beach with a few bream and whiting. The rockhoppers at Hat Head have been pulling in some nice cobia while closer to home there are a few tailor, small kings and tuna.
