Weekly Report 18/2/11

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Feb 18, 2011 12:10 pm

We have had fantastic conditions over the last week for the outside fishermen. The blue water is putting the Spanish mackerel on the bite. Spotties are in good numbers but the bigger units are harder to find. Most hook-ups have been off Grassy and Scotts but it is the same story as last week, the slimies are all but impossible to get. Laser Pros, Mackerel Maulers and Rapalas are working well on the mackerel. There were a few cobia caught last week, some off Grassy as well as the Jail Grounds. Yellowfin tuna are about, with bigger units out off the shelf with the odd billfish. No reports of any kingfish, but that should not surprise anybody seeing that’s been taken away from us. Late last week the current changed direction and headed north and with it has been some greener water. Let’s hope it brings in the slimies; then this place will go off.
In the river the herring have been harder to catch but there has been the odd yellowtail hanging around the jetties. Some better bream were caught along the breakwall last week with a few over a kilo. Clybucca has been fishing well for whiting on live worms and nippers. The Stuarts Point arm has been producing fair flathead and a few whiting. The bigger flathead have been caught drifting the wall with herring or the bigger Gulps. School jew are still about but not in the numbers they were.
Smoky Beach has been OK if you can put up with the bluebottles that are regularly there. Dart are in big numbers but it’s hard to get a bream. Rockhoppers are getting a few tailor with the odd tuna.
