Weekly Report 8/4/11

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Apr 08, 2011 12:08 pm

Some very uncomfortable conditions were with us for most of week but towards the end of the week we had a change in the water colour and, like a switch, the fish were back on the bite. Grassy and Scotts were home to some nice Spanish mackerel like Brett Wilkins’s 25kg unit and with a few spotted mackerel back on the chew it has been a productive few days. There were a few cobia and wahoo about around this location and off the Jail and down to Fish Rock. Yellowfin tuna have been caught in close with a few mac tuna and bonito. There are still no slimies; luckily, lures are doing the job. Big morwong are being caught out in 60m with some nice bar cod out a little wider. Smaller snapper and pearlies have been off the northern reefs.
The river fishing has been on the improve through the week with some nice flathead and bream coming in along the walls. The Jew Bite off the breakwall has been fishing well with a heap of herring in the eddy for live bait. Whiting have started to appear up river again, jumping all over live worms and nippers, while there have been some nice flathead past Jerseyville.
Smoky Beach was a hit or miss thing last week with a few whiting and bream being caught along the beach with a heap of dart still about. Gap Beach has bream and the odd flathead and tailor on the north end. Rockhoppers have been amongst some drummer, tarwhine and tailor with a few jew off Hat Head.
Dates to remember: April 22 to the 24 is the King of the River Fishing Comp run through the Smithtown Riverview Hotel. $500 for the biggest bream and flathead plus many more prizes to be won.
