Weekly Report 27/4/11

We got lucky with the weather over Easter, having four great days out of the five. Later in the week the weather turned worse so fishing wide was not an option. Spotted mackerel were on the bite off Grassy and Scotts with some spotties around 8 kilos. Good Spanish were caught in 45m in close off the same grounds. Wahoo have made a return in smaller numbers but one classic we weighed in went 33 kilo, caught off the northern wider grounds. Bottom fishers are getting nice pearl perch up to 3kg while snapper have been in fair numbers but not really big. The 11 fathom reef is producing a few smaller cobia and the odd wahoo. There has been plenty of bait around, the water temps are good so let’s hope the surface fish hang around.
If you are going to fish the river you will struggle at the moment. Holidaymakers battled to catch a legal fish over the weekend. There are plenty of small bream eager to steal your bait. There has been the odd flathead caught but they have not been world-beaters. With the beach haulers doing their thing this time of the year and the river netting happening by the professionals (both are legal) I do worry how our river will be fishing in one or two years from now.
Smoky Beach has been fishing well with some nice whiting coming in as well as dart and tailor along the beach. Local Glenn Putland fished this beach for a monster 6kg salmon with a good catch of whiting in his bag. Rockhoppers are getting a few tailor, drummer, tarwhine and bream.
