Weekly Report 13/5/11

We still have the southerlies and westerlies coming in and apart from cooling things down, it is pretty uncomfortable out there. It does look like the spotties and spanish have gone after a fairly good season. The Grassy Head reefs produced a couple of small cobia around 8 kilo while the snapper guys pulled a few up with some pearl perch and trag between Grassy and Scotts. There were some unstoppable runs down at Fish Rock last week; no doubt some big kingfish are lurking around the rock. There are good numbers of smaller kings about to keep you interested until that monster strikes. Jellybean yellowfin are starting to show up with a few caught last week. Trolling in close from the Rock to the Jail has resulted in some nice tailor. If the conditions allow, Green Island has some big bream around it.
All the action is along the beaches at the moment with Smoky Beach giving up some nice bream through the day and tailor mornings and afternoons. There are big salmon being caught off most beaches around town on just about anything you throw at them. The rockhoppers are hitting the tailor in fair numbers with the odd drummer and bream also off the ledges.
Some big jewfish have come out of the river through the week, the best I heard of was 28 kilo. The breakwall has some nice bream while towards the end tailor and salmon are in good numbers but rug up, it’s freezing at first light. Flathead were a little slow through the week. Look for them in the shallows as the water cools. There were a few school jew caught up towards Jerseyville around the bridge pylons.
