Weekly Report 5/8/11

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Aug 05, 2011 3:54 pm

Perfect conditions through the week, right on cue for the AAA National Titles. The guys chasing snapper found themselves further north off Scotts and Nambucca where snapper to 7 kilos were about. Good numbers of pearl perch up to 3 kilos were on the bite on the northern reefs along with fair trag. The current has turned around and heading north, bringing a plague of leatherjackets. The great conditions have allowed fishos to fish the shelf and further for some nice bar cod and blue eye. One of these fish at the time of this report looks like being an Australian record. Fish Rock has a few kingfish and the odd mack tuna. The live bait are in huge numbers off the bait reefs.
Blackfish are still in good numbers off the walls but biting only at certain times of the day – but when they’re on, they’re on. As far as other fish in the river, it is tough. Small bream are everywhere but the keepers are few and far between. Small schoolies are around Jerseyville with a few flathead about but it’s hard going. Now we have good water in the river Smithtown could be worth a go especially around the bridge.
Salmon off the rocks are in good numbers but bagging a nice tailor has been tough. There’s still the odd drummer to be caught off the ledges with a few bream. Smoky Beach and Gap Beach have some nice bream and the odd whiting taking worms while big salmon will test your gear.
