Weekly Report 3/11/11

Post by Tony Zann » Thu Nov 03, 2011 4:20 pm

Conditions last week were ideal for the bluewater fishos until the current all but stopped and the fish shut down. It was a case of slim pickings off the bottom around Grassy and Scotts with only a few small smaller snapper and assorted reef fish. The wider grounds have a little more current but the guys are still battling to get a feed. Down south to Fish Rock small rat kings have been about but apart from that there will be no fun until we get the run, as they say. One or two people fished the FAD for nothing. There are whispers of a stronger current heading south.
The river has been productive if you are fishing the flats past Jerseyville with good numbers of whiting coming out of the clearing water. Flathead are there but there are no world-beaters. A trip up to Smithtown will get you a feed of whiting with worms the key ingredient. If you feel like a bass head to Belmore River and throw a few lures for fish up to 45cm. It has been slow along the breakwall with just the odd bream, and no sight of the small cobia that came in the river with the big tides a week or so ago.
The local beaches have been just OK with a few bream and whiting off Smoky and Gap Beach while Main Beach has had a few whiting off the wreck.
Rockhoppers are getting some fish with school jew and the odd drummer off North Smoky.
