Weekly Report 30/12/11

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Dec 30, 2011 2:16 pm

Strong winds, rough seas and a dodgy bar. On Thursday a few boats got out there but the wind made it hard to fish. The charter boat Sea Scout fished the FAD for some smaller mahi mahi compared with what they were catching there before the blow, while trag were on the closer grounds. The good news is the water temps are spot on and there is a mile of bait off the Jail. Just before the seas we had reports from Grassy head and Hat Head of a couple of spanish and cobia being caught.
Plenty of holidaymakers are putting up with the southerly winds and having a throw in the river for good results. Flathead have been in good numbers in front of the tavern for the land-based fishos while some nice lizards have been caught along the breakwall on the drift. Whiting are also in good numbers up at Kinchela and Smithtown. There have been plenty of school jew along the walls, under the Jerseyville bridge and up river with the whiting. Clybucca and Stuarts Point are fishing well for bream, flathead and whiting. The mouth of the river has some big jewfish taking live mullet.
Smoky Beach is fishing well for whiting with the odd bream and dart. Main Beach and Back Beach have whiting in good numbers but a little small. We have had reports of a few tuna off the rocks but the rockhoppers can’t get at them due to the big swells.
