Weekly Report 6/1/12

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Jan 06, 2012 3:58 pm

It is all starting to fire up here with heaps of bait bringing marlin to the wider marks and in closer, spotted mackerel in smaller numbers with the odd Spanish taking live bait from Grassy Head to Hat Head. The water is up to 25° on top with some areas on the bottom very cold. Snapper are about with the best being Luke Bannon’s 7.7 kilo red off Grassy. Big morwong are around the Dot with some nice reef fish. Luke and Geoffrey from Newcastle had a cracker day around Fish Rock, hooking a monster tiger shark that’s still swimming around, some good kings on knife jigs, a12kg mahi mahi getting its freedom at the boat and a good Wahoo, both on skirted lures.
The river has produced some nice jewfish with the hot spots along the breakwall, under the Jerseyville bridge, Rainbow Reach and Kinchela. Whiting are also in good numbers on the sandbanks taking worms and nippers. Keeper bream have been tougher to find with your best chance in the darker hours. Flathead are jumping all over plastics and live bait on the drop-offs.
Smoky Beach and Gap Beach have whiting, bream and dart. The rockhoppers are doing it tough after last week’s big seas.
