Weekly Report 20/1/12

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Jan 20, 2012 4:43 pm

After that glowing report last week we have had big swells and cold green water so a lull in surface activity. It is not all bad news – there have been good numbers of trag off the northern reefs with a few nice snapper and pearl perch coming in. A couple of boats ventured out in a big swell to the FAD for some quality mahi mahi. Local charter boat Sea Scout 11 got lucky, finding a long floating log in fairly close with some nice mahi mahi under it. Reports from Fish Rock through the week have been patchy with one or two kings out of the green water. I am sure the pelagics will be back once it all settles down.
Fishing off the beach has been good with some nice whiting off Smoky Beach along with a few bream and dart. Gap Beach has been a little slower with the odd whiting and bream. Main Beach should produce whiting again after last week’s huge surf carnival.
The rockhoppers have nothing to celebrate; maybe the big swells may improve this situation.
In the river flathead are the fish to target with good numbers caught in a number of locations. Whiting are still on the bite from Smithtown down to Kinchela and Jerseyville. To catch a legal bream in the river is a mission and it would be best to fish the dark hours. The highlight of the week are some nice school jew to 6kg caught off the breakwall.
Congratulations to the committee of the Seabreeze Hotel Fishing Club for another successful Huge Fishing Comp with the $500 going to Col Bradbrook for the biggest bream at 870g and James Lewis got $500 for his 7.73kg snapper.
