Weekly Report 27/1/12

Fishos had to battle the elements. Winds to 20 knots have certainly made it tough outside. A few boats have ventured out with the charter boys for spotted mackerel with some nice snapper and pearlies in close. The FAD has been producing mahi mahi and a few marlin on the wide grounds. Yellowfin have been around Fish Rock taking skirts and mack baits with an occasional kingfish. Wahoo are starting to show up from the Jail down to Fish Rock. Hopefully we will not get the full force of the rain north of us; we don’t need another few weeks of dirty water to send the fish out wider. Live bait is still hard to get, so if you are chasing spotties don’t waste too much time on the lives.
There are some monster flathead in the river being caught on live herring, mullet and bigger plastics. It is always better to take a picture of these classic fish instead of a fillet. Last week bream were in better numbers along the walls on the tide changes. Under the Jerseyville bridge has been fishing well for flathead and school jew, even better at night. We are expecting a fresh to come down the river with a colour change so bring on the big jew.
Smoky Beach is fishing well for whiting with a bream or two coming in. This will improve if the river goes brown and pushes the fish out. We are getting reports of tailor from the Hat Head end of the beach at first light.
Back Beach should improve fishing up against the break Wall. Rockhoppers are getting the odd tailor and bonito from the ledges.
