3/3/06 Weekly Report

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Mar 03, 2006 4:35 pm

Just when things were starting to heat up again the weather turned crap and kept fishos on the shore.
Before the change spotties and a few Spanish were up off Grassy along with some nice reef fish towards Scotts Head. The slimies were a little harder to get last week amongst a million yakkas. There were some marlin around 150 kilo out wide. Mathew Gauci from Victoria hooked a rare 16kg short-billed spearfish off the shelf. A few marlin around 50 kilos were hooked in front of the Jail while Jo Gatt hooked a 68 kilo striped marlin at the FAD.Mahi mahi, cobia and kingfish are all available out of their usual haunts.
For the rockhoppers tailor are about in good numbers off most ledges from the Rocks to Hat Head.
Beach fishing is a non-event at the moment apart from a few whiting, bream and dart with the odd tailor straying from the rocks. Hopefully the bigger seas may churn up some action in the coming weeks.
The river has had some extra traffic because of the conditions outside with some good jewfish coming in, firing up with a combination of the fresh and new moon. Bream and flathead are on the bite but no reports of bigger than average fish this week.
There have been a lot of incidents on the bars over the last few weeks. Be prepared to wait and watch for the sets to lull and if in doubt, don’t go out.
