Weekly Report 23/3/12

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Mar 23, 2012 1:11 pm

Conditions were fairly ordinary early last week with fishos landlocked for a few days. When the conditions improved most headed north off Grassy for good numbers of spotted mackerel with the odd Spanish coming in between Scotts and Grassy. Bottom bashers are getting the odd snapper and trag out of this area. Live slimies are hard to find but seem this week to be the food of choice for spotties. Luckily a floated pilchard has been a good second bet. It was wild and woolly out at the FAD so there were no reports from there this week. Fish Rock has a few kings with reports of one or two cobia around Black Rock. Blue marlin are in numbers on the Canyons off Hat Head with some big fish among them.
We had another week where it was hard to pull a decent fish from the river. There were a few exceptions: local James Hassett landed a cracker 5.1kg flathead on cut herring off the breakwall early one morning. The odd good bream coming in from the same location. There are a few school jew around the Jerseyville Bridge pylons with a flathead or two about. Up river at Kinchela and Smithtown the odd whiting is on with some smaller flathead and bream. I know it’s early but there have been some blackfish caught along the walls – maybe only resident fish.
Smoky Beach has a lot of dart with some whiting and bream. Main Beach has some whiting while the Boulders have been productive. Some nice fish have been landed off the rocks but the boys are cagey on the locations.
