Weekly Report 30/3/12

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Mar 30, 2012 12:45 pm

We have had another productive week with fishos getting out most days in fair conditions. Spotties off Grassy are not in plague numbers but they’re getting their 3 or 4 each trip. Slimies are the problem; they are hard to find among the yellowtail. Spotties will take a pilchard or garfish but it is the slimies they jump all over. There is a sprinkling of Spanish and cobia up north up to Scotts with the odd snapper to 6 kilo. The current out at the FAD has slowed so there has not been much action out there. Out wider bar cod have been coming in from the deeper water. Marlin hunters have had mixed results but the reports are if you hook up, it’s a big fish. The Jail has produced some cobia but the go is to boat the fish before it’s lost to the many sharks that are here at the moment. Fish Rock has a few kings and the odd snapper.
The river is producing some nice flathead with one or two big units coming off the breakwall. We weighed in a 1.3kg cleaned bream this week. Most rock walls will produce fish. Whiting are still in good numbers on the sand flats and shallows. There are a few schoolies about in the deeper water around the Jerseyville Bridge pylons, the rock walls and the Cut Through at Kemps Corner. There’s plenty of herring about for live bait.
The beaches are a hit and miss at the moment with Smoky Beach the pick of them with some nice whiting and good dart coming in. Early morning and late afternoon have been producing tailor with some bigger units off the rocks.
