Weekly Report 13/4/12

No wonder blue-water fishos get frustrated. Last week a huge bar and flat seas, this week a bar you can water ski over and a big sea running. Late in the week a few boats got out and those who headed north were got spotted mackerel and a few cobia off Grassy in greenish water. On the bottom snapper and trag were caught from Grassy to Scotts. With the conditions ordinary, most guys were fishing the close reefs with pilchards and squid. It was fairly rugged around Fish Rock but there were a few kingfish on the bite. Guys trolling lures from the Jail to Fish Rock are getting some nice yellowfin and the odd longtail tuna. Live bait is still hard to find on the bait grounds.
The river is producing some nice flathead, you just need to search them out. Plastics and hardbodies are working well. If you get up river and fish the creeks on the tide changes you should hook one of these. Mitchell Preston, 7, of Sydney, caught two very nice flathead in Spencers Creek on prawns. Bream have been along the breakwalls along with some schoolies to 5kg taking softies. Whiting are still about on the shallow sand flats at Clybucca, Jerseyville and up to Smithtown on worms and pipis. GTs are starting to make an appearance, good fun on light gear.
Tailor are on Smoky Beach early in the morning with whiting, dart and bream coming in as well. Gap Beach has flathead and whiting while around the Boulders on Main Beach big whiting have been caught on worms
